African IT company redefining information technology
May 18, 2012
Over the last decade, among
several African countries Kenya has been the best environment for ICT
innovation. A recent study has revealed that Kenya has taken active steps to
enact suitable ICT legislation and provide an enabling ICT regulatory regime,
promoting open and private sector participation.
To capitalize on this
opportunity, Techno Brain, an information technology company from Tanzania,
expanded its operations into Kenya in the year 1999. Techno Brain started its
journey as a small IT Training Centre in 1997 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
However, unlike other companies, Techno Brain did not stop there and made a
strategic move, enhancing its expansion of operations and offering ICT solutions
within the African region.
In Kenya, Techno Brain is
the only IT Company that has a three-in-one unit that runs an IT training
centre, BPO/ITES facility and a state-of-the-art research and development
centre, all in one. In an interview, Manoj Shanker, CEO, Techno Brain Group
said, “This is a major milestone for an African company. TechnoBrain is
committed and dedicated to serving the African and global market with industry
best IT solutions.
The decision to have entire
Techno Brain offerings, such as training, BPO and R&D facilities in Kenya
were influenced by the need for a faster response and effective services to
clients using the ready availability of an advanced IT infrastructure, and
highly qualified local talent pool, including complete support from the Kenyan
Government”.
In the latter half of 2000,
this Tanzanian IT company felt the need to widen its scope and go global. Thus,
Techno Brain became the first Tanzanian IT company to go global and penetrate
the Indian market, recognized as a centre of excellence in IT in the world.
Over time, the company has also expanded its operations into the USA, UAE and
UK. These
strategic moves placed Techno Brain in the cadre of a record breaker in terms
of international success.
A Tanzanian daily newspaper quoted Manoj
Shanker: “Since inception, Techno Brain held a vision to be recognised as a
respected, global IT firm, while also being committed to society’s development.
With this vision and continuous support from governments across various African
countries and strategic partners, Techno Brain has been able to create a
difference in the lives of the common man with various innovative solutions”.
Now, in a real sense, every day and at every stage, Techno Brain’s solutions
are contributing to the endeavours of government or semi-government bodies in
several countries to earn more revenue, ensure national security, enhance
financial transparency, monitor drug trafficking, provide better
citizen-centric services and ensure an environment free of child abuse and
violence.
Over the years, Techno Brain has made
its mark in Africa as a value-added ICT solutions provider. For its
contribution towards providing effective and high quality ICT Solutions, the
company has won several global awards such as the Country Partner and ISV
Partner of the Year by Microsoft and number one IT Company among KPMG’s survey
of top 100 mid-sized firms.
In addition, it has also achieved ISO
9001: 2008 for Tanzania, Kenya, Malawi, and Uganda and BPO/ITES divisions for
following SEI CMM standards to deliver high quality solutions. The journey for
this Tanzanian company may not have been easy.
However, armed with determination and a
soaring vision, there seemed to be no aim too lofty that could not be achieved.
Today, Techno Brain stands as a true
example of enduring success as it continues to take giant strides into a
promising future!

Kenya ranked ahead of SA in Internet usage
By David Ohito
Kenya has more internet users than South Africa, the latest internet world statistics report shows.
Kenya is ranked fourth among Africa’s top internet countries
as at December 31 2011 figures. Nigeria is ranked the number one country with
45 million users but this is attributed to its huge population of over 155
million people.
Kenya which has a paltry 200,000 internet users in the year
2000 but currently enjoys 10.4 million
users as at the end of last year.
This figure however varies from the CCK statistics that put
total number of internet users at 17.3 million combining all mobile and data
internet subscribers, terrestrial wireless subscribers, satellite
subscriptions, fixed internet connections, fiber optic subscriptions and fixed
cable modem users.
According to the World Internet statistics, Kenya’s internet penetration is estimated at 25.5
percent of the population which stands at 41 million people. CCK’s figures put
the penetration at 36.6 percent.
The Kenyans users account for Africa’s 7.5 percent people
with access to internet.
The fresh report published on
www.internetworldstats.com explain how
the growth in internet uptake has
yielded fruits in Kenya.
The report notes that growth in Africa’s Internet and
Broadband sector has accelerated in recent years due to improvements in
infrastructure, the arrival of wireless access technologies and lower tariffs.
“Broadband is rapidly replacing dial-up as the preferred
access method. This process is already virtually completed in Africa’s more
developed markets. This report provides 126 statistical tables showing trends
and developments in the telecommunications markets of the 38 most significant
African countries in terms of telecommunications,”
The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) quarterly
sector statistics for the period October-December 2011 lauded the increase and
attributed it to mobile internet subscriptions.
According to CCK, Safaricom mobile data and internet
subscriptions stood at 4.6 million users, Yu Mobile followed with 670,000
subscribers, Airtel commanded about 608,000 users while Telkom Kenya had some
110,000 users.
